Safety valves are the
last apparatus to protect pressure equipments and people
working on them when all other check devices have not
attended. For this reason safety valves have to be well
manufactured, assembled, fitted and periodically checked.
Their design and construction are on our own responsibility
whether the choice of their correct size and type depends
on the decisions of the Manufacturer of the equipment
where the valve is fitted. Maintenance is on final user’s
responsibility to whom We are giving, hereby, all necessary
instructions and information.

After the equipment installation
or valve fitting, the following checks have to be made:
a) Verify that
the safety valve corresponds to those one foreseen by
the equipment Manufacturer on the ground of its final
use. Check also all technical data written on the valve
body and on the relative certificate that must be included
in the equipment technical documentation;
b) Safety valves
must be fitted in vertical position and in a place easy
to be reached to facilitate maintenance and eventual rapid
discharge actions;
c) In case of vessels
filled with gas or steams and liquids, the relative safety
valve must be fitted in the vessel area containing gas
or steam, anyway as much as possible far from liquids;
d) Connection between
vessel and safety valve has to be as short as possible
and It must have a flow sectional area bigger than valve
outlet area;
e) No narrowing
or cutting device must be fitted between safety valve
and vessel unless They are foreseen and stated by the
equipment Manufacturer directly and in compliance with
the rules and laws in force;
f) Pipings and
connections must be cleaned and free of deposits, chips
and scales.

a) Check that the
safety valve has no visible sign of wear or damage;
b) Verify that
the safety valve hasn’t any loss of fluid;
c) Open the safety
valve manually to check pressure tightness and to remove
eventual deposits lying in the valve inlet connection
or, in case of conveyed safety valves, also in the valve
outlet connection.
This action is very
dangerous and It has to be carried out only in absolute
safety conditions for the operator who must be very careful
not to be injured by the discharged fluid.

To be in full working
order safety valves need a careful maintenance programme
on the ground of their specific working conditions. It’s
important to foresee a periodic check of each safety valve
and its set pressure that, being quite difficult, should
be made at our workshop. This solution has the great inconvenience
that the relative equipment has to be temporarily stopped
or It should run without any safety valve during all the
overhaul time.
UNIVERSAL s.r.l. is not
responsible for eventual valve adjustments or tamperings
made by the final user or for eventual equipment damages
due to the absence of a safety valve under overhaul. For
this reason please don’t hesitate to contact the equipment
Manufacturer or our Technical Department to decide the
better way to proceed.
